Why would anyone ever return to a haunted house? For Diane Mercer the answer is simple. She's dying of cancer, and she wants to know once and for all whether ghosts are real. FROM THE AUTHOR OF ASYLUM, HAUNTED AND THE NIGHT GIRL. Heading home with her young son, Diane is determined to find out whether the stories are real. After all, everyone else claimed to see and hear strange things in the house over the years. Everyone except Diane had some kind of experience in the house, or in the little ash house in the yard. As Diane explores the house where she grew up, however, her son is exploring the yard and the forest. And while his mother might be struggling to come to terms with her own impending death, Daniel Mercer is puzzled by fleeting appearances of a strange little girl who seems drawn to the ash house, and by strange, rasping coughs that he keeps hearing at night. THE ASH HOUSE is a horror novel about a woman who desperately wants to know what will happen to her when she dies, and about a boy who uncovers the shocking truth about a young girl's murder.

The Ash house is an interesting three hour or so length story. Not so much a horror tale, although it involves a haunted property. Basically Diane, a terminally ill woman who knows she's only got a week or so left before cancer finally takes her at the most, visits her mother's house with her young son Daniel. She hasn't been back to the place for decades, when you read and experience the grandmother's persona (her mother) you'll sort of understand why. Diane has told Daniel they're just visiting for the weekend, but is there for two reasons, one she wants her mother to acknowledge she's about to die and to commit to raising Daniel since there is no one else to raise him, and two to experience one of the ghosts the supposedly exist in the house so she'll get comfort that there is something after death and that she won't just fade to oblivion. All her childhood friends encountered things when they came to play, everyone in town knew the place was haunted, but she never experienced a thing while growing up there as a child. She thinks because she was an unbeliever. If her mother ever acknowledges that she'll look after the boy instead of changing the subject or pretending she'll get better, Diane plans on grabbing her mother's car keys, tell her she's going into town for an erand, but in reality will keep driving and will never be coming back. Like a dying cat she'll find somewhere far away from there to die, so her son won't find her corpse or remember the procedures occurring in the aftermath dealing with that. But her mother is being her usual self and won't give her the comfort she needs, she's hearing things but isn't sure they are a ghost, her wishful imagination, or just the house? Daniel is spending all his time in an ash house which is a miniature house out front, that back in the distant past ash was stored in.

The Ash House is a decent read, it improves a lot in the final chapters. For some reason the chapters don't always occur in timeline order, although this is probably intentional and not a mistake. Spoilers will be mentioned when explaining this although you would have worked out this would happen anyway. Diane has died in some chapters, yet the next is still alive. I'm not sure of what the point on not simply having the chapters in event order is all about. It didn't add anything to the story with them not being so. It doesn't stop you from enjoying the novella, but just seems odd, and like a mistake when you first encounter it, but it happens a few times so it's likely not one.

This was a ghost story, about a sick mother who takes her son to live with her mom in the house she grew up in. And outside of the house is a tiny stone ash house, are their ghosts in the house? The mom hopes so because when she dies, she wants to watch her son grow up
The Ash House was a bit heart-wrenching. A mother who knows she is dying and wants to see that her son is taken care of after her passing. I'm not really into "ghost" stories, but I did feel the emotion of the characters throughout the story line. It did seem to jump from character to character a bit quickly, but over all not a bad read.
I ordered this book based on the description. However I don't feel it was an accurate description. The book was really not scary until the very end and even then it wasn't nearly as scary as I had anticipated given the description. There was actually several parts that I found babyish. Given other books by this author, I was disappointed.
I had never read any of Amy Crosses books but this is my second one. After reading the first book, I ordered alot more of of her books, hoping not to be disappointed and i"m not. Her books are so different, have twists and turns and let's you know how each character sees the same situations. They hold your attention and have great plots. I would recommend this book and author to anyone. Happy reading !
The Ash House by Any Cross is a fast paced read. She literally pulls you into the abyss of the unknown through the characters residing in the haunted house. I for one would really love to see and visit a haunted house. If you love a good horror book, then I suggest you read this book.
The Ash House is a well written ghost story by Amy Cross. This author likes to write her books from the perspective of a few of her main characters which keeps it interesting. The book follows a great pace and has a very well developed twist at the end that I did not see coming, so I really enjoyed that. The book was very well written and had a great plot that I enjoyed reading.

You can't help but hurt for Diane, the mom who is slowly dying of cancer and doesn't know how to tell her son, and is also trying to figure out if ghosts are real to try and be there for her son after she is gone. Her son is a very smart kid and is a very likable character, just like his mom. Nana is your somewhat typical grandma if you ask me.

This is definitely a enjoyable read if you like a good ghost story with a good twist and some gore in it, not too bad on the gore scale though.
This is the first book from this author that I've read. It looked like she writes scary books, so I grabbed up some when they went free and thought I'd give her stories a try. This was a ghost story, about a sick mother who takes her son to live with her mom in the house she grew up in. And outside of the house is a tiny stone ash house (to hold ashes in, not used for decades) where all the little kids are drawn to play in. Only there are some creepy spirits attracted to the little shelter. And possibly more around the old house. The book was on the shorter side, though still book length. The story was good and there was plenty of chill-factor mixed in with a good general story. Overall the writing was good and it was just what I was looking for. I will definitely read more from this author.
