Murder on Haint Branch is an 80,000 word mystery novel set in Western North Carolina. Infidelity, moonshining, a crooked lawman, and a self-serving preacher are the building blocks for the novel. From the moment the sheriff tells Eula Sanders that her son, Charlie, has been shot, until the last few pages where we find out why Charlie died, the reader is given a glimpse into the way life really was for the Appalachian People in the early forties. "They said he shot hisself, but you don’t shoot yourself through the heart with a shotgun and lay it back down on the bed by your side. At least that’s what my granny said the day Sheriff Carlson told her that my Uncle Charlie had been found shot dead and lying on his brother’s bed."

The story gets you so involved into the characters that you feel that you were there and you were part of this life. Kids this day and time would not survive these times growing up,where a cup of hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies during the mid week was a big treat. All I can say is this story was very good and I enjoyed it very much. I was raised in the South growing up their the fifths working on farms from Sun up til down I know what a tough life was in my time.Product details

Murder on Haint Branch Eva McCall 9780988943100 Books Reviews
It goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on. If you like reading about hillbillies, you'll like this story. It reminded me a bit of some of Steinbeck's work in that it does paint a picture of the times and the people but none of it is pleasant.
Very good read. The twists and turns keep you guessing. Written as a mountain person would talk, it is one of the best I have read lately. But the ending will leave you stunned. Well worth your time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is one of the best I have read in a good while. The characters were each outlined in the story so you could identify them-not like many which I have read whereby I had to go back constantly to identify each character. Well worth the read.
It started out kind of strange and hard to follow but I kept at it . Being an ex teacher the speech was annoying but I guess people still speak that way in the hills. It was a good story about the trials and temptations of family members living so close together and being somewhat shut off from society they forget the rules.
The only flaw in this one was the way it stayed with one character for a long time, then suddenly switched among characters for the rest of the book. This was a little disconcerting. And I wasn't completely pleased with the ending, either. But it was a very fascinating study of backwoods life in "moonshine country." I recommend it.
The characterization in this story is wonderful. I've never seen people like this in any other book. There's so much color and texture in the descriptions that I felt I was there on Haint Branch. The glimpse back into early 19th century was believable.
The mystery was hard to solve, though the clues were there. Still, it strained my credibility.
The only real flaw was that the main character, a young girl, happened to be within earshot whenever people revealed their personal thoughts and secrets, even if it was deep in the forest. Too many such coincidences. That kid really got around.
This book was just okay. The main character is a young girl named Ollie. The supporting characters are the members of her extended family. It is a cozy mystery. Who killed her Uncle Charlie and who is her real mother? (She was raised by her Granny). The story takes place in rural northwestern North Carolina in a town called Franklin. My family has been to Franklin while we were on vacation in Asheville many years ago. The story is told in the voice of 14 year old Ollie, and is written in the rich dialect of the region. Sometimes it was difficult to understand the dialect. A good story, but I don't think it was my cup of tea.
The story gets you so involved into the characters that you feel that you were there and you were part of this life. Kids this day and time would not survive these times growing up,where a cup of hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies during the mid week was a big treat.
